Southern Pines was Founded by John T. Patrick as a health resort on March 7, 1887. It was thought of as a place where North and South could meet and work together to establish a better relationship after the civil war. Many visitors came, and still come, to get away from the winters and enjoy a return to good health.
Southern Pines still had a long way to go. The stream of newcomers who chose to settle here had to have shelter, supplies, services, churches, schools, safe streets, pure water and fire protection.
Several of the new homes were built facing the railroad tracks. Living near the tracks was considered to be an asset. Many of the homes clustered around the center of town. Some were private homes while others were boarding houses and hotels. A few of the latter were seasonal.
A stranger first visiting Southern Pines in the mid 1900s would hardly have been impressed. There was not much to see except the periodic arrivals and departures of trains or an occasional ox cart. A livelier spot in the downtown area was the newly opened Patch Department Store in the Tarbell Building . Its slogan of the time boasted, "We Sell Almost Everything," and they did indeed-from groceries and dry goods to shoes and souvenirs.
Southern Pines of today, which boasts to be the "Golf Capitol" of North Carolina has 41 golf courses in the area and will have 5 to 7 more by the end of the year. If you love to golf, this is the place to be.
